So obviously my blog is not your 'typical writer's blog'. So when I was talking to Liz Borino, the author of Expectations, I was thrilled that she still wanted to be a guest. I warned her that my questions would be a touch on the spicy side, and she was more than up for the challenge. So a pause in my dirty writing to sit back and enjoy an interview with a great person.
1. Tell us about you and your book.
I’m Liz and I’m incredibly boring. Really, I grew up in small town PA and have lived in three states and Venice, Italy for three weeks. That’s kind of interesting, I guess right?
Now to my story: EXPECTATIONS depicts the struggle between what we desire for ourselves and our familial obligations. This is personified by Chris and Matt Taylor, identical twins, who are trying to win their overbearing father’s approval and acquire their trust funds. Their best friend and roommate, Aiden O’Boyle, left his family behind in Ireland to pursue a career in dance.
Robert Taylor, Matt and Chris’s father has set certain conditions that must be met in order for them to receive their trust funds. Matt must work at a job he hates, while struggling with alcoholism. Chris has to deny his own desires and deep love for Aiden, to get married to Matt’s girlfriend. All the while, their father continues to use extreme measures to ensure his sons’ compliance. The story takes place against the backdrop of preparation for Aiden’s upcoming performance.
2. Now that that is out of the way...let's have some fun! Describe the process of writing your first sex scene.
In this book? OK this is going to sound really weird, but for the scene where Chris and Aiden got together, I first decided who would be ‘on top’ and then I played “Go the Distance” from Hercules over and over again. Think about it, now I’ve ruined that song forever for you haven’t I?
3. How did you write a homosexual love scene with so much intimate detail? Research?
I had a conversation with a bisexual (male) friend in the school computer lab about positioning and other than that I let my characters tell me what they want, in every sense of the word. Honestly, that’s more it than anything. The scenes were written based upon what the characters felt, wanted, and needed at that point in the story. The first sex scene Aiden had the upper hand, so to say. But in the next one with them, Chris was working to bring him comfort. As far as Matt and Carley, she was a virgin, so it was a different dynamic altogether.
4. How did you figure out what the line was from erotica to romance?
I haven’t, ha-ha. I asked Staci if adding another sex scene would push it into the erotica realm. She explained to me that’s not how it works.
5. Now a fun one...if you were to write an erotica what genre would it be in?
I’d say M/M BDSM. In M/F BDSM I get too caught up in my feminist ideals to enjoy it.
6. Now that you are a LazyDay Author you have met authors of all genres. What was it like getting to know all the erotica writers?
I have loved getting to know every single author that Lazy Day has signed. They’re all wonderful people and I feel so lucky to be a part of this group.
7. What makes you blush?
Reading about rimming. For those not in the know, rimming is when one partner puts their tongue in the other’s ass hole. That’s the only thing that gets to me in a negative way.
8. What is the first dirty book you read?
One of the Stormy Glenn books, I’m sure. I didn’t really read a whole lot of dirty books, at first. Then I expanded my horizons to M.L. Rhodes, yes both M/M, sue me.
9. How many sex scenes are in Expectations? And why did you choose that number?
Four, three with Chris and Aiden and one with Matt and Carley. And I didn’t choose it. My boys just can’t keep their hands off each other. They’re too in love not to express it physically. Matt and Carley needed one as well.
10. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you so much for having me!
