I Need To Be Wined And Dined

It came to my realization that I need to set the mood to write a sex scene. I need wine...white is my preference. I need a candle near by. And I need to be in the right mood. I guess you could say I am a high maintenance author. Ha ha.

Can A BDSM Book Be Too Abusive?

So I just finished a book that made me literally say...WOAH! It came across harsh, and frankly a little abusive. Actually, it came across as REALLY abusive. This book was categorized under BDSM. Now when a person buys a book in that category, they need to understand the content of the book. There very well may be spanking, bondage, whips, dominance, submission and even some pain. BDSM is not always for the faint of heart or for a "vanilla" reader. I think anyone who reads this type of book and expects all romance, flowers, and missionary position sex, is going to be in a shock of their life... or at least their literary life.

I am about as open minded and liberal thinking as one can get when it comes to sex and erotica. Just read my books/blog to prove that point. I believe that there is a kink for everyone. I support the writers who put themselves out there and push the taboo envelope...but this book took it a little too far, for me. I won't mention the book or author, because even though I didn't like the book or the level of BDSM...I still respect the fact that the author put themselves out there. I respect the author and book enough to say, "Not my type of book. But it may be for someone."

But what this book did do for me is make me question my next book that I am currently in the editing stage of. I don't want a reader to ever think my hero is abusive. I have grown to love my hero and want the reader to see the romantic, loving, sensitive alpha that he is. It has made me rethink some of my own writing...not sure if this is a good thing or not. Even though I didn't like the book, I have to hand it to the author. It made me question my own writing. I just don't want anyone to read my book and walk away saying, "WOAH!"

Well, actually I do...as long as it is in regards to my HOT sex scenes. ;)
